Almost Happy

Barack Obama sent me e-mail at 4 a.m. this morning, 30 minutes after I went to bed, announcing that Joe Biden is his vice presidential candidate.

The first thing I did after returning from a 7:30 a.m. breakfast at Le Peep with MacTroll and X-man was to refresh my mind (since I've been avoiding news) about who Joe is.

Let's be real, I didn't watch anyone that wasn't Hilary, Barack or John in the primaries...

From his bio, there isn't anything to not like about Joe. He even calls himself "Joe" on the website. He seems friendly, down-to-earth, bi-partisan and not an ego maniac. Plus, he's been in the Senate for 36 years. He fights for education, he's "tough on crime" as they say (especially violent crime against women in a domestic setting), he's got decades of experience in foreign relations... the list goes on and on.

Barack chose him because he is the perfect counterbalance for a youngish president. I'm not at all surprised by his very logical and reasonable choice for a running mate.

But here's my ugly truth—

I'm extremely disappointed that Joe has a penis

I guess I got my hopes up for too much change.

I also had my hopes up on that one.

I too had to refresh my mind about who this Joe guy was. Not too much news under my rock :) As I was looking him up, I said to O, "Well, he's an old, white guy." He's got a penis and lots of experience. I guess we can at least hang out hat on the fact that Michelle absolutely rocks and will be doing more in their first year than most first ladies do in four.

From NARAL:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 23, 2008

Statement from NARAL Pro-Choice America on Sen. Barack Obama's Vice-Presidential Selection

Washington, D.C. Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued the following statement in response to Sen. Barack Obama's selection of Sen. Joe Biden as his vice-presidential running mate.

"Sen. Biden has consistently expressed support for a woman's right to choose. While we have not agreed with him on every vote, we have a longstanding relationship with Sen. Biden that is open, positive, and constructive, and we are confident this will continue in a new administration under Sen. Obama's pro-choice leadership.

"Most notably, Sen. Biden has a strong record of opposing judicial nominees with hostile anti-choice records. He voted against George W. Bush's two anti-choice nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court, John Roberts and Samuel Alito, and he opposed anti-choice Justice Clarence Thomas' nomination to the Court as well as multiple anti-choice nominees to lower federal courts.

"In addition, Sen. Biden has a strong record in opposition to anti-choice clinic violence and voted to hold anti-choice extremists convicted of violent attacks against doctors and patients at women's reproductive-health centers accountable for their criminal actions.

"Sen. Biden, who is a cosponsor of the landmark Prevention First Act, also has joined us in supporting commonsense efforts to prevent unintended pregnancy by improving women's access to birth control, ensuring teens receive accurate sex education, and supporting family-planning programs."

NARAL Pro-Choice America, which tracks all choice-related votes in Congress, classifies Sen. Biden's record as mixed choice.

I just saw my baby's heartbeat on Wed at only 6 weeks pregnant. There should be no choice to stop a beating heart.

Everyone is certainly welcome to his or her opinion and his or her own belief system. I may not agree with you, but I totally support your right to speak about it.

And I wish you well with your pregnancy.

I admit I'm disappointed w/Obama's choice of vp candidate. I was really hoping for a female running mate. He still has my vote but all I can remember of Joe Biden is that when he ran for pres. the first time he plagiarized a speech and took a beating in the polls for it, so much so he dropped out of the race. If McCain chooses a female to run w/him, I fear he'd win. Scary.

In addition to Biden's strong pro-choice record, he "has been a champion in the fight to end violence against women. He was not only the principle sponsor of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), but he was the chief navigator and champion of the issue in the Senate. He has ensured in 2000 and 2006 the reauthorization of this act" (source: Ellie Smeal of Fem Majority). Likewise, he is a strong supporter of CEDAW. So he has a penis, but at least he's using it more for good than for harm...
I have long said (since 2000 when Hillary for Pres first started to make the rounds) that (unfortunately) I thought that this country would be ready to vote for a man of color for president long before it was ready for a woman. Just look at our historical record...ALL men given the right to vote (now whether or not they actually could is a whole other story!) about a half-century before women were. I had a feeling history would repeat itself in regards to women presidents as well.

For the record, David was a big Biden supporter for many, many years. I think this is about as close to a dream ticket for him as there could be (except if Obama had chosen Kaine..but we're both biased on that one!) :)

When are we getting that coffee?? ;)
