Feeling the Dread

Seriously, any person with a brain knew it was going to go this way. Well, kind of. I thought he'd pick a woman who was more "liberal" than he was. I guess I just expected someone like Olympia Snowe... someone with all kinds of experience to back up his claims that Obama doesn't have any.

But if this race is really going to be about gender, then I don't think anything matters at this point. And I find that disappointing. I wanted a woman picked because she was the most qualified person for the job. Not because she has a vagina.

And, probably, for the third time in 12 years... we're going to have such a tight race.

I do think it was very smart on his part to pick someone more conservative. My dad (a die-hard republican) and his friends were not happy with McCain and the fact that Palin has some more conservative views along with the
fact that she's a woman and a mother of FIVE will probably sway some people over to the right.

Plus, she's young. All I kept
hearing about was McCain's age, his health problems blah, blah, blah. Having a young vice may help liven up his campaign and maybe appeal to the younger generation.

On MSN this morn. Mike Huckabee was quoted as saying:
"Governor Palin ... will remind women that if they are not welcome on the Democrat's ticket, they have a place with Republicans,"

Watch out Obama!

I feel it is pandering and was almost thinking about starting to think about thinking about Mcain and was intrigued with his toying with Leiberman- but now I am Obama all the way!

I really don't think that this decision is going to make the race super tight. Sure Palin is going to shore up some of the fundamentalist conservative base. But there are going to be some (quite a few, I believe from my own personal experience with many in that group) who are going to have a hard time with the fact that she's a woman, not to mention her inexperience.

If he were to win the election, McCain would literally be a heartbeat away from leaving a second in command who is WAYYYYYY less qualified and experienced than his opponent Obama (and inexperience has been his major charge against O. That charge has now been neutralized by this selection.), let alone his opponent's second in command.

For former Hillary women who are on the fence, they need look no further than two simple facts: A-When the Democrats first put a woman as the second in command on a ballot in 1984, Palin was runner-up for Miss Alaska. I don't know about you, but I know very few Hill-supporters/feminists who are pro-beauty pageantry/pro-objectification of women. and B-Palin is an extremist. She doesn't even support abortion rights for women who are survivors of sexual violence like rape and incest. Heck, I think even that last point is going to turn off a LOT of middle-of-the-road voters.

Seriously, I don't think this is going to have an impact at all, except to move the pendulum back in Obama's direction. Obama will be able to hold his own with McCain (or even blow him out of the water)--but a Palin-Biden Veep debate? That's going to be the thing that'll be the final nail in the McCain's coffin. I am absolutely not worried. Not at all.

I don't know, if I had just had a baby with Downes Syndrome 5 months ago, I might be staying at home to focus on my child for a few more months. But that's just me. I guess we all have different priorities.
